In every business, there’s that one moment when everything changes. For us at Brandemix, it happened when we landed our first client: Lisa Kotliar, former Senior Human Resources Business Partner at Astoria Bank.
It all started with a simple request—Lisa needed a brochure for job candidates to take home during the interview process. I pitched an idea called the “App Wrap”—a unique, double-sided brochure that wrapped around a job application. The goal was to pre-sell candidates on the bank’s culture, benefits, and people before they even met the hiring manager. The idea was fresh, creative, and aligned perfectly with the bank’s goals to attract the right talent.
While the concept itself was exciting, the reality of turning that vision into a product was a learning experience. The App Wrap evolved into a beautiful folder that fit within the client’s budget of $500. The good news? The client loved it. The bad news? It cost us $600 to create—the copy, graphics, and print-ready artwork.
Ouch! But that initial project led to much bigger things. We went on to design and produce a variety of impactful recruitment marketing materials, including advertisements, videos, and an entirely new careers site. It was a win-win for everyone involved, and it taught us an invaluable lesson: The First Rule of Business: Always price your work above the cost of its creation.
